Before you even proceed on taking kite lessons, you may want to know about its origin and what it’s all about. So, what is kitesurfing?

This is a type of extreme sports increasingly gaining popularity worldwide. It has been around for quite a while already. However, it only started gaining popularity in the early 90s, and now continuously becoming so. Using the wind at its most basic form, the surfer is attached to a high-powered kite, with the board as the means for water support.

This sport comes in different names, fly surfing and kiteboarding to name a few. Kitesuring comes in various styles, like wake style, speed, wave surfing and freestyle. Each style calls for different kites and body techniques.

History

The propulsion idea discovered by the Chinese, which is the idea applied in kitesurfing, goes way back in the early 12th century. The Chinese back then used the kites as the tool to pull canoes and boats across the water. In the 1800s, kitesailing, as how it was called in the past, was rediscovered by George Pocock. He took the basic design of the kite and increased the size to allow pulling of ships and carts.

In the 1980s, Wipika made a breakthrough, re-designing the kite in a way that allows it to launch from the water. That was when the LEI (Leading Edge Inflatable) kite was discovered.

It wasn’t until the 1990s in Maui when Manu and Laird Hamilton introduced kitesurfing to the public, mainly comprised of surfers and other extreme sports enthusiasts. Since then, the sport started to gain recognition worldwide and is now considered as one of the fastest emerging water sport.

What are the required equipments?

The required gears for kitesurfing are harness, helmet (especially for beginners), board, wet suit, surfing kite and depower system (optional). Most surfers make use of inflatable kites which are useful for re-launch. Without this, it’s not possible to re-launch considering that cells fill the moment the foil kite gets in contact with water.

How much do gears cost?

Brand new kites range from $400 to $1,800, depending on brand and size. Brand new boards, on the other hand, range from $400 to $1,000. If you want to economize, second-hand stuff can be bought at a cheaper price.
